Taupō is gearing up to host two Ironman events within three months after multiple postponements due to Covid-19 complications.
Organisers of the 2023 Nutri-Grain Ironman New Zealand have announced that entries are open for the long distance triathlon, set to take place on March 4, 2023.
The 2023 event will follow on from the 2022 Ironman, being held on December 10, after it was pushed back from March this year.
The last Taupō Ironman was held in March 2021 and race director Wayne Reardon said with Aotearoa - New Zealand's borders reopening from April 13, organisers are expecting to welcome many international athletes to Taupō’s great lake, rolling hills and scenic roads.
In 2021, it was estimated the event brought $27 million worth of economic benefits into the district.
“Ironman New Zealand showcases the best of the country’s natural wonderland and delivers one of the most electric atmospheres of any Ironman event in the world,” Reardon said.
He said the organising team were excited to put New Zealand on the global triathlon stage once more.
“We can’t wait to welcome hundreds of domestic and international athletes to Taupō twice in the space of a few months, giving participants, their families and spectators the chance to experience the culture and beauty on offer in the home of Ironman New Zealand.”
Reardon said entries for both events were limited and urged competitors to act fast to secure their spot on the starting line.
Taupō Business Chamber president Rory Scott said the announcement was great news for the district and would be a welcome boost for local businesses.
“Any event as we move back towards normality is not only desirable but beneficial for our business community.
“We can't wait to welcome the country back into our community,” he said.
Taupō mayor David Trewavas said the community was looking forward to welcoming Ironman athletes back to the region for the iconic event.
“Our local businesses always benefit and the buzz around town is always something to look forward to.
“Hosting two full Ironman events within the space of a few months is an added bonus,” Trewavas said.
