Ohakune is the gateway to the Tongariro National Park World Heritage Site and Mt Ruapehu's ski fields. It is also known as the Carrot Capital of New Zealand with rich, volcanic soil ideal for growning carrots - there is also a giant carrot statue in the town centre.
Whakapapa and Turoa are the two main ski fields that professional and amateur skiers and snowboarders flock to each year, they also enjoy Ohakune’s varied entertainment, night life, restaurants and cafes.
